"In the non-stop thriller, The Phoenix Apostles, magazine journalist Seneca Hunt is reporting on the opening of Montezuma’s tomb in Mexico City when the dig team learns that the remains of the Aztec emperor are missing. Within moments of the discovery, an apparent terrorist attack kills everyone at the site. Seneca barely escapes the carnage and begins a hair-raising investigation into the cause of the tragedy. A memory brought up by the description
That description interested me because something like this happened in 1997 at The Queen Hatshepsut temple in Egypt, which I did visit in late 2009, remembering that event.  Over 50 tourists arrived early morning and were about to climb ramps and steps to the various levels, accompanied by guards and police, when they were all mowed down by terrorists, shot and then stabbed in case any were still alive.  I think one policeman survived.  Needless to say tourism was way down for years afterward.  While walking the site, I couldn't help but think of what those tourists had gone through a dozen years before that.

EDIT TO ADD:

Growing a better future: Food Justice in a resource-constrained world (expanded edition English)
Author: Robert Bailey
Genre: Global Food System - Economics - International

DESCRIPTION: The global food system works only for the few - for most of us it is broken. It leaves the billions who consume food lacking sufficient power and knowledge about what they buy and eat, and the majority of small food producers dis-empowered and unable to fulfil their productive potential. The failure of the system flows from failures of government - failures to regulate, to correct, to protect, to resist, to invest - which mean that companies, interest groups, and elites are able to plunder resources and to redirect flows of finance, knowledge, and food. Growing a Better Future describes a new age of growing crisis: food price spikes and oil price hikes, devastating weather events, financial meltdowns, and global contagion. It shows how the food system is at once a driver of this fragility and highly vulnerable to it, and why in the twenty-first century it leaves 925 million people hungry. Growing a Better Future supports a new campaign with a simple message: another future is possible and we can build it together. Over the coming years, decisive action around the world could enable hundreds of millions more people to feed their families and prevent catastrophic climate change from destroying their (and our) futures. In this new enhanced edition, Oxfam adds papers and research which develop and update the main themes of the report: land, and the growing scandal surrounding the new wave of investments (`land grabs'); how climate change is related to food security and the East African food crisis; and how people living in poverty around the world have coped with food price crises. There are also extended case studies from Bolivia, Brazil, Guatemala, India, Malawi, and Nepal, and an extended and updated bibliography and resources list.

  1. Andrys - I do not use facebook or twitter (I want to avoid them for privacy reasons and I also don't want to have more temptations to keep me on the computer :) ). H owever, I was thinking about using twitter and the Kindle sharing feature this way: I would join twitter with a a private profile. I would set myself up as my only follower. Then, when I am on my kindle, could I use kindle's sharing feature to tweet a note to myself which would appear to me when I log on to my computer? This could be a way of reminding myself that I want to send information or a link to an article to a friend. I would see this the next time I logged onto my computer without having to check the clippings file at Amazon. I hope I am saying this in a clear way.
    Thank you,
    Edwina O'Toole

  2. Edwina,
Seems to me it would work! Love the idea. Why don't you try it and then let us know if this is possible.
I'm not sure that you'd even need to set yourself up as a follower.

The only way it wouldn't work is if your account needed to be a public one, but I doubt they did that.

  3. Andrys -
I haven't tried to set up the twitter process I mentioned above yet, but I have tried to clip and add notes to PDs (these PDS are documents on my Kindle Keyboard (KK) from "Send to Reader" via Amazon).
My highlights/notes appear in "My Clippings" file on the KK but not at the "Your Highlights" file at Amazon.
I tested it with a converted document also (converted by Amazon and sent via Wifi to my KK) and could only see additions to the "My Clippings" file on the KK but not on the "Your Highlights" at Amazon.
Somehow, I thought you or commenters indicated that as a new feature.
    Thanks, Edwina

  4. Edwina,
The new personal doc features include archiving and sync'g the files but they say nothing about inclusion of the annotations on the private annotations blog on the Amazon servers.

I hope they'll do this later, but for now they're doing only archiving and sync'g (which is what most people have requested on the docs, as most don't even know about the annotations page, in my experience.

NOTE: TO AVOID SPAM being posted instantly, this blog uses the blogger.com "DELAY" feature.

Am often away much of the day, and postings won't show up right away. Posts done to use referrer-links may never show up.

Usually, am online enough to release comments within a day though, so the hard-to-read match-text tests for commenting won't be needed this way.

Feedback and questions are welcome. Thanks for participating.

Technical Problems?
If you're having problems leaving a Comment, Google's blogger-help asks that you clear the 'blogger.com' cookies on your browser's Tools or Options menu bar and that will fix the Comment-box problems (until they have a permanent fix).

IF that doesn't work either, then UNcheck the "keep me signed in" box -- Google-help says that should allow your comment to post (it's a workaround to a current bug).
Apologies for the problems.

TIP: There's a size limit. If longer than 3500 characters or so, in a text editor, make two posts out of it.
